A bar lockout and new coffeehouse fuel San Antonio restaurant news

The Winchester has shuttered after eight years.
At the tail-end of a brutal October, an Alamo Heights gastropub has shuttered, joining a San Antonio restaurant blood bath that has claimed Good Time Charlie’s, Bandit BBQ & Burgers, and Mash’d. Elsewhere, spooky season has been less scary with the opening of a quaint King William coffeehouse and fall menus galore. Read on for more essential San Antonio dining news.
Openings and closings
The Winchester Pub in Alamo Heights is out of ammunition after eight years in Alamo Heights. A lockout notice recently appeared on the door of the 5148 Broadway gastropub, but the business reportedly shuttered earlier in October. The bar, which took over the former home of Lion & Rose in 2017, has not issued a formal announcement about the closure, going dark on social media after October 11. CultureMap has messaged the business for more details.
A new Southtown coffee house is brewing up unexpected flavors in a historical King William home. The appropriately named King William Coffee House debuted on October 27, serving caffeinated drinks and Scratch Kitchen pastries. While serving up the usual espresso classics, the cozy spot also has a surprising palate. The newly released seasonal menu includes a brown sugar latte with carrot, cardamom, and ginger, while a match latte features plum and rosemary.
A lightning round of chain news: IHOP is converting its 3820 Broadway restaurant into a hybrid pancake house-slash-Applebee’s. Boerne is getting a second Jersey Mike’s Subs at 10049 Lemon Creek Blvd #117. And fruity franchise Playa Bowls is eyeing its fourth Alamo City shop at 12922 Potranco Road #124. All are set to arrive by mid-2026, according to state filings.
