Bandit BBQ & Burgers goes dark after brief San Antonio comeback

In March, Bandit BBQ & Burgers surprised San Antonio by reopening after a three-year break. Just as suddenly, the restaurant has thrown in the towel, closing its 2769 Nacogdoches Rd. restaurant on October 20 after only a seven-month run.
"It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we share the news that Bandit BBQ & Burgers has officially closed its doors," wrote the business in an Instagram post. "This is not a message we ever hoped to write, and making this decision has been one of the hardest steps of our journey."
The owners did not give an exact reason for the closure, but explained "a number of circumstances" contributed to the decision. In the end, Bandit said, it reached a point where "continuing is no longer possible."
Bandit first debuted in May 2020 at Southtown's Freight Gallery & Studios, offering curbside takeout at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it received a slate of positive press, including a write-up from Texas Monthly, the business went dark in May 2022.
After a long break, the concept resurfaced in March in the former home of Biff Buzby's Backyard. The site seemed like a good fit for the business, allowing it to offer its signature smoked meats and a full bar.
But the old real estate chestnut of location, location, location might have been the bugbear. In recent years, the address has seen a revolving door of similar concepts fail. Windmill Ice House shuttered in July 2023 after a two-year stint; Biff Buzby's lasted less than a year.
Despite its disappointing end, Bandit focused on the community connections it made while running the business.
"What we hold onto most is the incredible community that surrounded Bandit," it wrote. "Your support, kindness, and energy meant the world to us. We are grateful to our team members, who poured their hearts into making Bandit a place people loved, and to the San Antonio community for embracing us with open arms."
