San Antonio Food Bank cultivates new farm-to-table restaurant weeks

Sari-Sari Filipino Restaurant, Market and Bakery will offer a signature dish, Tortang Talong, during Restaurant Weeks: A Farm to Table Experience.
The San Antonio Food Bank is putting a fresh spin on a familiar fundraiser, Restaurant Weeks: A Farm-to-Table Experience, taking place June 7-21. Instead of ordering the usual prix-fixe menu, Alamo City foodies can fight food insecurity by taking advantage of the summer's bounty of locally grown vegetables.
During the inaugural event, participating restaurants will feature a signature dish showcasing produce the food bank grows at its main facility on Highway 90 and its 50-acre farm at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano. The summer harvest includes winter squash, hot peppers, eggplant, watermelon, canary melon, tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, and assorted herbs.
When the food bank first announced the promotion, some of San Antonio's most celebrated restaurants immediately signed up, including Supper at Hotel Emma, Pharm Table, The Jerk Shack, Sari-Sari Filipino Restaurant & Market, and Naco Mexican Eatery. Since then, a roster of culinary heavyweights has joined the crew.
"The San Antonio Food Bank Restaurant Weeks campaign is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our partnerships with local restaurants, bars, and eateries," San Antonio Food Bank President and CEO Eric Cooper said in the press release. "Their support and your participation will directly help ensure that no child goes without a meal this summer."
Food bank officials said each participating eatery committed to raising at least $500 through the inaugural event. Each dollar raised provides seven meals for local children through the nonprofit's Summer Meals for Kids campaign.
The program aims to shrink a 20-million-meal gap that local children face during the yearly summer break. The campaign serves over 200,000 youths who would otherwise not receive key nutrition when school is not in session.
"Providing meals is a service of love, and participating in the San Antonio Food Bank's Restaurant Weeks is a great opportunity to see our work come together full circle, straight from the farm directly to our tables," Camille de los Reyes, chief executive officer at Sari-Sari, said. "Seven meals for every dollar donated is very powerful, and it really makes me feel good about the kids we will be able to serve this summer."
Restaurant week promotions have become increasingly popular in San Antonio. San Antonio Restaurant Week — River Walk Edition wrapped up its first season May 18, joining local nonprofit Culinaria's biannual Restaurant Weeks in promoting the local dining scene. Still, there seems to be no shortage of restaurant owners willing to sign up and give back.
