New San Antonio shop bakes up plant-based treats, plus more food news

Vegan sweets shop Miss Chickpea’s Bakeshop celebrated its grand opening on February 2, according to a Facebook post. In addition to plant-based treats like cupcakes, cakes, and “Faux-reos,” the bakery at 8065 Callaghan Rd. also offers savory kolache in flavors such as spinach and pesto and jalapeño sausage.
A new brewpub, Back Unturned Brewing Co., is barreling into 516 Brooklyn Ave. sometime in the summer. If that address seems familiar, it’s because it currently houses the Boulevardier Group’s iconic cocktail bar The Brooklynite, which is moving behind Still Golden Social House in late spring.
Speaking of beer, The Growler Exchange opened its new location at 4130 Broadway St. on January 26 after closing its nearby outpost earlier that month. The move allows the beer haven to expand its operations, including an expanded 30 tap wall and a new pizza kitchen.
It looks like the days of BYOB will soon be over at chef Pieter Sypesteyn’s NOLA Brunch and Beignets. The restaurant has applied for a beer and wine retailers permit with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, according to a public notice.
Food nonprofit Culinaria has announced the return of its popular 5K Wine and Beer Run on March 16. The event is once again taking place at the Shops of La Cantera where sprinters can find snacks, wine and beer tastings, and other activities after the race. Tickets can be purchased here.
Nathan’s Famous is bringing its hot dog eating contest to the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on February 23. The qualifying round allows contestants to compete in the nationally televised final round, held at Coney Island on July 4.
