Austin's Hopdoddy fires up burgers & margaritas in north San Antonio

Hopdoddy Burger Bar is opening a third San Antonio location.
Beloved Austin chain Hopdoddy Burger Bar is firing up a new San Antonio location. According to state records, the gourmet burger pioneer will soon begin renovating a former Pei Wei Asian Kitchen outpost at 11267 Huebner Rd., bringing brews, beef, and buns to the North Side.
Although the restaurant has not released official details, the new outpost - the third in San Antonio - will undoubtedly follow Hopdoddy’s winning formula of making “better burgers” from an assortment of proteins like Angus and Kobe beef, chicken, Ahi tuna, and turkey. The chain does offer a couple of vegetarian options, but it ditched its plant-based meat substitutes in 2023 in favor of offering patties sourced from eco-minded regenerative ranches.
Hopdoddy pairs the burgers with shaved Brussels sprouts and hand-cut fries served plain or with Parmesan truffle seasoning, green chili, and hot honey with sage. A few select locations have recently introduced chicken strips and sandwiches, including both San Antonio outposts.
Each Hopdoddy also has a full bar. Though the restaurant was named after hops and features a large selection of Texas craft beers, its margaritas, like the Doble Fina with a black lava salt rim, have arguably become even more famous. Boozy shakes made with vodka, rum, and whiskey make for a buzzy dessert.
The chain anticipates that its $350,000 renovation will be completed in January 2025. Once the location opens, guests can expect giveaways and local charitable support. A portion of the sales from every Good Night/Good Cause burger — a fan-favorite with Tillamook cheddar, caramelized onions, jalapeños, and caffeinated barbecue sauce — goes to nonprofits.
Hopdoddy was founded in 2010 by Austin industry vets Guy Villavaso, Larry Foles, Chuck Smith, and Larry Perdido, quickly becoming one of Texas’ biggest restaurant phenomena. The first San Antonio burger bar opened in The Rim shopping center at 17623 La Cantera Pkwy #101 in 2016, followed by a second outpost at 1301 N Loop 1604 W #101 in 2019.
