Californians invade and a beloved bodega checks out in San Antonio dining news
In this age of downturned heads glued to touchscreens, few businesses can claim to be a community hub. Sadly, San Antonio lost another one this week as the city grapples with its identity.
Openings and closings
San Antonio’s most eclectic convenience store is throwing in the towel after five years in business. Jefferson Bodega, beloved for its vast beer selection, Asian snacks, and charming staff, announced the move through a passionate note. Though the statement did not give a final date, the decision appears to be immediate. A “for sale” sign now sits in front of its West Side building.
Local craft beer companies may be in the weeds, but national chains are ready to take some of that turf. Novo Brazil, a California-based brewery known for its IPAs, is entering the San Antonio market. According to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing, the company will start renovating a North Star Shopping Center space in July. The $2 million build-out will include a full kitchen and a dining room, although the menu has not been made public. Other locations serve bar food like wings with a few Cal-Mex and Brazilian specialties.
State records also reveal that locally owned mini-chain Bourbon Street Seafood Kitchen is planning a fourth location. The New Orleans-themed restaurant will begin construction at 25765 I-10 W. in April and wrap up by the following spring. The space will give the restaurant 6,000 square feet of breathing space, a covered patio, and a dedicated waiting area.
The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa is entering the pizza market. The luxe resort recently revealed its latest concept, Fiamme Pizzeria, which will open in the summer. In addition to Neapolitan pies, the new venture will offer appetizers, salads, desserts, and a signature cocktail menu.
Lover’s Pizzeria, the mom-and-pop shop that replaced Carnitas Lonja, has been booted out of its Roosevelt Avenue address. Via social media, the eatery shared that its landlord is forcing it to vacate the building. Luckily, the owners were already on the hunt for a new location. Those details are still being kept mum, although an emoji exchange with Reese Bros Barbecue does raise some suspicions. Lover’s last day at their current address will be March 30.
Other news and notes
San Antonio’s sole Central Market will soon undergo a facelift. The two-phase operation will include a new façade, a complete redesign of the interior, and an expanded seating area for the café. The redux is expected to be complete by spring 2026.
