Cali chain Fatburger closes last standalone San Antonio restaurant

Fatburger has closed its last standalone location in San Antonio.
Call it a Greek tragedy with buns instead of pita. After soaring with Icarus-like expansion plans in 2022, Fatburger has now closed its last standalone San Antonio restaurant at 13480 San Pedro Ave. at Bitters Road and U.S. 281.
"We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your support and for allowing us to be a part of your community,” wrote the restaurant on a taped notice. “Over the years, your loyalty has meant everything to us." An employee confirmed that the store was "Packing up."
If the above language sounds familiar, it’s because Fatburger used the exact phrasing when closing its other area restaurants. The key difference? The signage no longer directs diners to another area location.
The San Pedro Avenue closure marks an end to Fatburger’s brief, if heated, franchise dalliance with San Antonio. In 2022, local franchisee Brame Brands and parent restaurant group FAT Brands announced an aggressive Texas expansion that would bring 80 locations of the latter’s flagship brands — Fatburger, Round Table Pizza, and Buffalo's Express — to the Alamo City. The first Fatburger brick-and-mortar, a shared location with Buffalo's, opened in May 2024.
In late January, however, FAT Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections, closing 32 of its company-owned restaurants, chiefly Smokey Bones, Yalla Mediterranean, and Johnny Rockets. While no San Antonio restaurants were part of that wave, Brame severed ties with the Hollywood-based corporation, a move that also affected all San Antonio-area locations of Round Table Pizza.
Brame has since pivoted to opening original concepts at Fatburger sites, like the newly announced Chuzz Burgers. The group describes the concept as “chaotic,” which seems like an apt origin story.
Fatburger has not pulled out of San Antonio entirely. The recovering brand operates an outpost inside Six Flags Fiesta Texas. That restaurant was opened as part of a licensing agreement with the park and is not related to other franchise deals.
