Luxurious new spa takes flight at downtown San Antonio hotel

The Iran war, the Cyclospora outbreak, driving on I-35: San Antonio has a lot of reasons to be stressed out. Still, the newly opened Monarch San Antonio hoped to give the city a few moments of bliss.

The $185 million downtown property at 222 S. Alamo St. is now taking bookings for its full-service spa, open to both locals and hotel guests. The complex includes four private treatment rooms, offering services such as massages, facials, and hydrothermal experiences.

Many of the treatments are built around tech, like contrast therapy that cycles between cold plunges and 158-degree sauna heat or light therapy that uses targeted wavelengths to target inflammation or hyperpigmentation. Facials are more low-tech, focusing on products from Skin Authority and Spain’s Germaine de Capuccini.

Spa services aren’t exactly gentle on the wallet, with 80-minute facials offered at $299, but this is a hotel that serves up $225 porterhouse steaks and caviar service.

For a more budget-friendly wellness experience, locals can take part in the Rituals Beneath Her Wings series underneath the property’s La Mariposa sculpture. Free for hotel guests and $20 for drop-ins, the lineup includes Tuesday evening Pilates, Saturday vinyasa flow, and a Sunday sound bath at sunrise.

Like the hotel itself, the spa’s interiors take inspiration from the monarch’s annual migration through the San Antonio region. Fluttery light fixtures hang overhead, and the carpeting subtly reflects the spots of butterfly wings.

The spa's opening also completes Monarch San Antonio’s suite of luxury amenities. The hotel took in its first guests in March, introducing its hospitality offerings with three new restaurants: Oak & Amber, Aleteo, and the Nectarie Café.
