COMING ATTRACTIONS
Fiery new taquería erupts in San Antonio's River North

Volcano will serve tacos, but will they be tacos volcanes?
A new taquería will soon bring “the true flavors of Mexico “ — and a little confusion — to San Antonio’s River North. A restaurant called Volcano is being built at 315 Eighth St., the original home of Artisan Distillery.
On June 25, the restaurant filed Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) project details for tenant improvements at 723 N. Alamo St. The move caused a small eruption of panic. That address is the home of Roadmap Brewing Co. and its popular resident food truck, Last Place Burger.
Via an Instagram message, a rep from Roadmap assured CultureMap that it was not making any sudden detours and said its address is frequently confused with 723 S. Alamo St. That site houses a business that is equally dear to local hopheads, Bar America.
Turns out neither address is correct. Volcano is going into the space around the corner from Roadmap, where Artisan operated for five years before moving to the East Side and later shuttering altogether.
Phew.
Details on Volcano are still slim. The restaurant has created a Facebook page that promises it’ll use “premium ingredients” and make “homemade salsas,” but it hasn’t posted any menu details. A banner image shows a couple of selections, neither of which appear to be tacos volcanes, the Mexico City staple made by griddling corn tortillas with molten cheese.
According to the TDLR filing, the $80,000 construction job is set to begin in July and end at the tail-end of December. But a construction video posted in November 2025 shows the project is well underway. State regulatory filings are subject to change without notice, and as the address mix-up shows, can sometimes contain errors.
Volcano did not immediately respond to a request for more information. We will update this article should the business owners come back with more details.
