As San Antonio debates which high-end restaurant has the chops to make it into the Texas Michelin Guide, this week’s dining news comes from a more casual sector. Another Arizona franchise finds promise in Alamo City (maybe it’s the heat?) while a burger joint pleads for its life.
Openings and closings
Mamma mia! The first local outpost of Arizona chain The Sicilian Butcher is set to debut in early 2025. According to records at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the casual concept is renovating a space at 5534 N. 1604 W. Landmark Pkwy. #110, estimating a turnaround in late February. Like fellow Arizona importPostino, the restaurant serves Italian-inspired comfort fare but with a particular focus on meatballs and charcuterie.
Medical Center caffeine peddlerArchies Coffee Lounge is brewing up a new location downtown. Since debuting in 2021, the concept has set itself apart by offering plant-based energy drinks, CBD infusions, and a curated list of cocktails and mocktails. The 122 Broadway spot will celebrate its grand opening August 9-11 with limited-time discounts.
A go-to spot for specialty Tex-Mex fare has closed one of its locations. Via an August 3 social media post, Tamale Boy announced that it was immediately shuttering its North Side shop at 2201 Northwest Loop 410. The 5300 S. Flores St. outpost will remain open as usual.
Other news and notes
Burger joint Teddy B’s is the latest San Antonio restaurant asking for support in navigating an uncertain future. In a social media statement, the decade-old concept admitted to a decline in traffic that is affecting its ability to keep costs. In a follow-up post, the owners thanked the community for a recent outpouring of patronage, but still left the fate of the business in the air.
South BBQ is offering a $2,000 cash reward for intel that leads to the recovery of a stolen smoker. According to an August 2 Instagram post, the business recovered the unit’s trailer using a GPS tracker, but the actual smoker was already removed. Replacement costs are prohibitive, ranging well past five figures.
Flavortown’s newest coordinates have zeroed in on Leon Valley. Moroccan Bites Tagine, previously featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, have a second chance at Food Network fame through an appearance on Guy Fieri’s Triple D Nation. The episode airs August 9 at 8 pm.
