The Spurs only have a few games left in the NBA Finals, but the San Antonio brewery scene aims to keep local sports fans honking through the summer. From a new blonde ale celebrating the Toros’ comeback season to a craft beer confab downtown, here’s what has Alamo City hop heads cheering this June.
Summer goals
Minor league football has returned to the Alamo City after the Brahmas were sidelined last fall — and with it comes the unexpected comeback of the Continental Football League and the San Antonio Toros, a team that hasn’t seen gridiron action for half a century.
Naturally, that calls for a pint. Adkins' Cactus Land Brewing has launched Toro Blonde Ale, “a beer built for game days, Texas heat, and cheering on the squad all season long.”
“This collaboration is all about celebrating local sports, community, and bringing people together over something crafted right here in South Texas,” wrote the brewery via social media. “We’re proud to be a part of what the Toros are building and grateful for the opportunity to create something unique for their organization.”
All over the map
Roadmap Brewing is going on a side quest for its second annual Detour Fest. The sudsy summit draws nearly 20 breweries from around Texas and the U.S. to San Antonio from 1-5 pm on June 13.
The name nods to the thousands of miles the participating breweries logged to reach the fest. In addition to attracting Texas standard-bearers like Austin’s Hold Out Brewing and Vacancy Brewing, the event draws out-of-state makers such as Crooked Crab in Maryland, Lavery Brewing in Pennsylvania, Branch and Bone Brewing in Ohio, Brieux Carre in Louisiana, Lupulin Brewing in Minnesota, and Strange Craft Beer in Colorado.
General admission includes a commemorative Detour Fest glass and six four-ounce pours. A First Class ticket adds two extra pours and a festival enamel pin. Additional beer tokens are available for purchase on the day of the event.

Dining for a cause
Wild Barley Kitchen and Brewery is fighting childhood food insecurity with a pop-up dinner for the San Antonio Food Bank. Chef Geronimo Lopez, the food bank’s new vice president of culinary operations, will work with the kitchen to set up six grazing stations featuring produce sourced from the nonprofit’s San Antonio farm.
Each $50 ticket will provide 14 meals to area youth through the food bank’s Summer Meals for Kids program. The feast runs from 5-8 pm on June 16.
