Buzzy L.A. Korean barbecue chain Gen closes sole San Antonio eatery

San Antonio's only Gen Korean BBQ House has closed.
Was the all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue craze more tepid than it seems? The sole San Antonio location of buzzy chain Gen Korean Barbecue House at 11745 I-10 in The Huebner Oaks shopping center has closed less than two years after its 2025 debut.
Members of the San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group first noticed the closure, reporting that the brand appeared to have skipped town without warning. No formal statement was issued, but the restaurant has since disconnected its phone number, and both its Yelp and Google Business profiles list the business as permanently closed.
It’s unclear when exactly Gen turned off the lights. Although it has not posted on Instagram since September 2025, Yelp reviews were still pouring in as late as mid-April.
The Los Angeles-based chain opened its first San Antonio location in February 2025, quickly gaining attention for an unconventional menu that mixed traditional Korean fare like bulgogi with pan-Asian appetizers and Mexican dishes like pollo asado. Gen filed state regulatory paperwork for a second location at 7514 S. New Braunfels Ave in March 2023, but the outpost has never come to fruition.
The closure follows the February shutter of locally owned Ooh La La Korean BBQ, allegedly due to unpaid rent. Like Gen, it failed to reach its two-year mark, bowing out after 14 months.
Still, Korean barbecue spots continue to proliferate in Alamo City. The Guy Fieri-approved chain Dae Gee Korean BBQ debuted in January 2025, and East Coast restaurant Honey Pig BBQ also recently announced it would open its first Alamo City location later in 2026. And since introducing itself to San Antonio in 2023, KPOT has now grown to two area locations.
