Though corporate boardrooms may view San Antonio as merely another market, this week’s dining news prove the city is not yet ready to cede space to the buttoned-up hordes. Local restaurateurs hold their ground with a trio of original concepts while a food truck centers community over profits.
Openings
Although the owners remain tight lipped on the The Creamery District’s sixth promised hospitality concept, filings at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations have spilled the beans. Records show that construction on Hook Sports Bar will begin in December with a hopeful wrap-up date of April 2024. Details are slim at this point, but the joint will include an outdoor terrace and, assumably, a few flat screens.
First, she conquered diner fare, then she moved to tacos. Now, the chef behind cruelty free eateries Vegan Avenue and Plantology is turning her attention to burgers. Griselda Munoz will debutKind Burgers at 1305 Pleasanton Rd. Sometime in mid-June, providing a plant-based, gluten-free alternative to San Antonio’s fast-food frenzy.
Prolific San Antonio chef Jason Dady is netted a new addition to his restaurant empire. According to a release, Roco & Martillo opened May 29 at The Rock, the San Antonio Spurs’ La Cantera campus. The menu combines Texan and Tuscan influences in dishes such as Bourbon honey-glazed bobwhite quail and a smoked brisket lasagna.
A posh Houston wine concept is pouring into the Monte Vista area. The Art of Cellaring, a storefront that includes retail space, storage space, classrooms, and a members-only lounge, will debut sometime this summer at 2810 North Flores St., a historic building that has been home to a Masonic lodge and a Piggly Wiggly.

Hillcrest burger jointFredericksburgers will be on temporary hiatus as it recovers from a fire. Via a Facebook post, a rep commented that it might open an outside trailer while it recovers. None of the employees were injured during the blaze.
The new Pullman Marketcelebrated Memorial Day by introducing a new Military Monday discount. The promotion, which will run through Veteran’s Day (November 11), will allow anyone presenting a military ID to enjoy a 10-percent discount at all restaurants and quick service eateries. A five-percent cut is also available at the grocer, excluding alcohol purchases.
Hawaiian food truck Big Aloha’s Ali’i Cove is spreading island hospitality to Universal City’s unhoused communities. Starting June 30, the trailer will serve hot meals to unsheltered neighbors monthly. The repast will be available on the last Sunday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
