San Antonio indigenous group to launch initiative for moms at gala and fashion show
Whether it's Mother Earth or the mom next door, creating generations is creativity. This Mother's Day weekend, indigenous nonprofit American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM) is highlighting some of that creativity in a fashion event and dinner that directly supports moms.
The 9th Cactus Blossom Gala and Fashion Show, taking place May 10 at event venue Hangar 9, is bringing together creative clothing, storytelling, dancing, and dinner in a benefit for AIT-SCM's Mission of Motherhood (M.O.M.) Initiative. Details of this new venture have been sparse so far, but this launch event should put things in perspective.
AIT-SCM organizes its programs into three categories: Community Engagement, Indigenous Arts, and Family Health & Wellness. An Instagram post on March 28 honored women who worked in the latter category, which includes the new initiative.
"Women are the backbone of AIT-SCM’s Health and Wellness work," the post said, "providing resources and support to clients of 7th Generation Birthing Services, the M.O.M. Initiative, and the San Antonio Fatherhood Campaign. We don’t just appreciate them for the work they do, but who they are. Their intelligence, thoughtfulness, humor, and courage does not go unnoticed."
This "reimagined" gala calls for "outdoor chic attire." It's all produced by Director of Programs Isaac "Papabear" Alvarez Cardenas, a member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, and a psychotherapist for children and families. Alvarez Cardenas helped envision the Fatherhood Campaign in 1988, which serves as inspiration for M.O.M., now.
Some major themes in AIT-SCM's year-round work are civic and community engagement, storytelling — especially with Emma “Grandma Coyote” Ortega — and learning about food. In addition to enjoying indigenous foods at the gala, people who want to learn more should stay tuned via social media for year-round events either serving or teaching workshops about the topic. Attendees should also note that May is MMIWP (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People) Awareness Month.
Tickets ($125) for the 9th Cactus Blossom Gala and Fashion Show are available at aitscm.org. The event runs from 6-9 pm at 8081 Inner Circle Rd.
