Famed sitcom dad Tony Danza swings into San Antonio for cabaret show

Tony Danza croons at New York's Café Carlyle.
San Antonians are about to get a little New York swagger this fall from a beloved sitcom dad. Actor and entertainer Tony Danza, best known as the wisecracking Tony Micelli from Who’s the Boss?, is bringing his lauded cabaret show Standards and Stories to Pearl’s Jazz, TX, for a three-night run November 7-9.
Danza and his four-piece band have been winning over audiences nationwide with the revue. The act weaves swinging tunes from the Great American Songbook with yarns from the star’s decades-spanning career. The performer is still spry at 74; guests can expect ukulele solos and even a little soft shoe.
Starting his career as a middleweight boxer, Danza was thrust into television stardom after being discovered at a New York gym. Since then, he has built an enduring television career that spans hits like Taxi and Blue Bloods, a talk show, and a memorable recurring role on Broad City.
His turn to the stage isn’t as big a surprise as it may seem. Danza has wowed Broadway crowds in a revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh and sold out seats as Max Bialystock in The Producers.
Danza’s Jazz, TX show comes on the heels of his recent residency at New York City’s iconic Café Carlyle, where his Sinatra & Stories show paid tribute to his late friend, Frank Sinatra. Critics gushed about the hot ticket, with The New York Times calling Danza “a live wire who tap-dances, plays the ukulele, tells stories, and radiates irresistible charm.”
Danza will stage four performances during his San Antonio stay, a 7 pm performance each night and an extra nightcap show at 10 pm on November 8. The tickets, starting at $130, are available for one to six seats, but fans should act quickly to ensure the best perch.
