Special San Antonio concert keeps spirit of Selena alive 25 years after death
Twenty-five years after Selena Quintanilla's death, her influence on San Antonio and South Texas is more profound than ever. Next year, a special group of young musicians will pay homage to her legacy with a very unique tribute.
On November 8, the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio announced the theme for its 2020 Classic Albums Live concert: Viva Selena! The show takes place on March 9, 2020, at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
Comprised of San Antonio youth, YOSA is a resident company within the Tobin Center, and features students from 130 schools across the city. Each year, more than 2,500 young people, ranging from ages 8 to 20, take part in YOSA programing. The Classic Albums Live program, similar in style to the Boston Pops or BBC Proms, recreates iconic or contemporary records with classical stylings.
Singer Isabel Marie Sanchez will join YOSA to perform Selena's greatest hits, such as "Como La Flor," "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom," and "Dreaming of You." With Sanchez on vocals, the songs will be backed by a full orchestra, making this truly a one-of-a-kind evening.
"The memorable concert will honor the life and legacy of the cultural icon 25 years after her passing with a night of music and celebration," organizers say in a release.
Along with the music, the celebration includes contests and unique photo ops, along with "extra fun." Selena superfans can also upgrade to a special VIP package including an after-party at the El Tropicano Hotel Riverwalk. VIP guests will keep the celebration going with even more music and dancing, as well as complimentary beer, wine, and food.
Tickets and VIP packages for Viva Selena! go on sale Friday, November 15, at 10 am, ranging from $25-$100. The first 100 tickets purchased also include a free Selena tumbler.
