San Antonio unveils conceptual plans for Main Plaza upgrades

San Antonio has a new vision for Main Plaza.
For nearly three centuries, downtown’s Main Plaza has functioned as San Antonio’s common ground. Now, city leaders are planning for the future with an anticipated renovation set to begin in summer 2027.
The city and the Main Plaza Conservancy are mostly focusing on accessibility, but the improvements will also include new amenities to keep the historic square active beyond major events like Fiesta. Plans call for regrading surfaces, upgrading restrooms, and improving seating to ensure safer access for wheelchair users, caregivers with strollers, and anyone who struggles with uneven terrain.
The proposed updates also make room for enhanced gathering areas, expanded green space, new furniture and surfacing, improved pedestrian circulation, and a pavilion for performances and other community events. Plans also call for a concessions building and updated landscaping.

“We are excited to make these improvements to Main Plaza to ensure accessibility for all people,” said Molly Hall-Villarreal, Executive Director of Main Plaza Conservancy, in a release. “The Conservancy’s role is to steward this historic space so San Antonians and visitors can safely and meaningfully access the generational heart of our city, enjoy this public space, and learn about its legacy.”
The initial designs come after years of public input and investment by the Conservancy and other San Antonio foundations, trusts, and individual donors. Although the initial vision has been created, the improvements still have a few hurdles to clear. The plans will next head to the Historic and Design Review Commission in March. “Great cities are defined by iconic public squares where people from all walks of life can gather, and San Antonio is no different,” said District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur in a statement. “Main Plaza’s stories are woven into the fabric of our city, and investing in its future helps preserve our identity while creating a space everyone can enjoy.”
