The University of Texas at San Antonio is parting ways with its football coach. On December 1, UTSA announced that it fired Frank Wilson after four years as head coach of the Roadrunners.

"I want to thank Coach Wilson for his efforts on behalf of the football program and the university, and for his commitment to his student-athletes," say Lisa Campos, VP for intercollegiate athletics, in a statement. "As only the second head coach in our history, Coach Wilson continued to build on the foundation of a young football program and we are grateful for his contributions to UTSA."

Wilson's removal comes following a 41-27 loss to Louisiana Tech on November 30, marking the final game in the Roadrunners' dismal 4-8 season. During his tenure as head coach — the second one ever, as Campos notes — Wilson racked up a losing 19-29 overall record.

But, as the university points out in its statement, Wilson's time at UTSA was also peppered with a few crowning achievements, including leading the Roadrunners to their first-ever bowl game in 2016, and a shocking road win over football powerhouse Baylor in 2017.

Still, the last two seasons were mired in losses for Wilson, who previously worked as a running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana State University. And, despite having two more years on his contract, according to ESPN, the school announced its decision Sunday morning just hours after the Louisiana Tech loss.

"While decisions like this are never easy, it is important that we take the steps that will help us build for the future and keep UTSA Athletics a vital part of the community," Campos continued. "There is so much to look forward to as we continue to position our program to compete at the highest level."

To compete at that highest level, the school says a national search to find a new head coach is underway.
