Favorite San Antonio health-food restaurant sprouts up in Southtown
You can bet the farm that San Antonio’s beloved globally inspired, plant-forward eatery is putting down roots at its new Southtown location.
Pharm Table, chef Elizabeth Johnson’s health-focused restaurant, opens Tuesday, March 23, at its new brick-and-mortar location at 611 S. Presa St., Ste. 106, after operating for several months out of a food truck.
Part farm-to-table eatery, part unique apothecary, all delicious, Pharm Table will continue to serve up the plant-forward menu items San Antonians have been fans of since Johnson first opened Pharm Table in 2015. But the chef — long an advocate of the traditional Ayurvedic philosophy that food can be medicine — has also expanded her protein offerings at the new location and will tap her evolving global spice library for her rotating menu of nourishing fare.
“Our incredible new menu offers the opportunity for guests to savor global flavors through an Ayurvedic lens,” Johnson says. “My hope is not only to encourage healing through food, but to offer creative, healthful preparations in a way that brings guests a sense of joy and discovery. As a party favor, they are going to feel great when they leave.”
The expanded menu features starters, mezzes, soups and broths, small plates, salads, desserts, and a selection of sustainably raised meats and fish that can be added to dishes. Highlights include Israeli-style hummus and roasted roots, cilantro coconut guacamole (which Johnson refers to as “Ayurveda meets Mexico”), smoked mole verde enchiladas, and the tamarind amchur curry bowl with seasonal cruciferous vegetables, as well as new additions like a Japanese-style ceviche, a Gravlox Board featuring beet-stained salmon gravlax, and a seared fish-of-the-day special.
A variety of apothecary-inspired, botanical-driven house cocktails (We see you, Sumac Sour!), brunch cocktails, natural wines and beers, and zero-proof drinks also grace the menu, as do some longtime Pharm Table favorites, like tacos and brunch items that were popular at the previous location. For diners craving something extra special, Johnson will offer a rotating selection of off-menu meals during dinner service.
Built on the foundations of mindfulness, ancestral knowledge, Ayurveda, artisanal cuisine, organic farming, physical health, and vital energy, Pharm Table is bedecked in lush plants, as well as botanical illustrations from San Antonio-based artist Rikkianne Van Kirk, and features a patio space that will host free wellness community classes each Sunday morning.
Though the bar space isn’t yet open, due to COVID-19 safety concerns, lots of exterior seating is available.
Pharm Table will be open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch, brunch, and dinner service during its soft-opening period, which runs through March 29, and reservations are recommended. Extended permanent hours are to come.
