Lockout notice clouds future for acclaimed San Antonio burger joint

Unko Maui's Burgers has been locked out for an alleged lease default.
Less than a year after debuting in the Deco District, Unko Maui’s Burgers at 1815 Fredericksburg Rd. is facing an uncertain future. The restaurant’s landlord, Biodec, LLC, has issued a lockout notice for an alleged lease default.
The posted notice did not go into details about what caused the action, nor has the restaurant issued a public statement. But the Unko Maui’s did change its Google Business profile to read “temporarily closed.”
The burger joint’s owner, who goes by Maui Mike, took over the former home of Deco Pizzeria in March 2025 after the former shuttered. The concept was an extension of Hawaiian favorite Maui's on Main, which has operated since 2024.
Unlike the original concept, which serves rice bowls and spam musubi, Unko Maui’s Burgers tightened the menu to only feature burgers like Da Slippa, its take on smash burgers, and the Loko Moko Burger with onions, mushrooms, brown gravy, and a fried egg.
The juicy patties and unexpected toppings made it both a Texas Monthly write-up and the admiration of locals. Users of the influential San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group often named its burgers among the best in town.
It’s unclear when the lockout notice was posted, but Unko Maui’s has been silent on social media since February 3. A request for comment was not immediately returned. The 2,907 square foot building, built in 1960, is currently listed for rent on LoopNet by St. Croix Capital Companies.
