TROUBLED WATERS
Smoke Skybar bankruptcy filing clouds San Antonio venue's future

Smoke BBQ + Skybar's fate is in limbo after a bankruptcy filing.
The fate of popular San Antonio party bar Smoke BBQ + Skybar at 1100 E. Houston St. is now in question after the venue filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The filing comes as owner Adrian Martinez faces multiple lawsuits in Bexar County District Court.
According to bankruptcy records, the business lists nearly $2.7 million in liabilities. The filing states that Martinez owns no real estate and reports total assets valued at $50,000 or less. Unlike Chapter 11 proceedings, Chapter 7 bankruptcy typically involves liquidation of assets.
CultureMap attempted to contact Martinez through Smoke’s Instagram and Facebook accounts but did not receive an immediate response. Shortly after the request, the venue’s Instagram profile was no longer publicly accessible.
The bankruptcy filing follows a series of lawsuits from creditors seeking to recover money from Martinez and related business entities. As first reported by MySA, the debts include roughly $300,000 in unpaid rent and damages tied to the Houston Street location, $600,000 owed to LBJR Investments, and $12,000 in back taxes related to a short-lived North Side outpost.
Since opening Smoke: The Restaurant in 2015, Martinez has launched and shuttered several iterations of the concept on the East Side, the River Walk, Stone Oak, and in Corpus Christi. All but the current Houston Street location have since closed.
During a 2022 expansion push, Smoke hosted several high-profile rooftop events featuring artists such as 2 Chainz and 50 Cent. In September 2024, following the shooting of Texas coach Ayden Burt from a stray bullet, Smoke Skybar closed its outdoor concert stage.
