Openings and closings
Capping off a discouraging week for San Antonio’s culinary scene, healthy(ish) Tex-Mex restaurant La Fiesta Patio Cafe at 1421 Pat Booker Rd. unexpectedly shut down on May 27, according to an Instagram post. On May 16, the classic Alamo City spot announced it would have to clear out of its longtime home by mid-June. Due to “unforeseen circumstances,” it was forced to vacate earlier. The Universal City favorite has served puffy tacos and leaner enchiladas since 1974. The cafe hasn’t entirely thrown in the towel just yet, promising, “If and when there is any news of [a] future location, we’ll keep you posted.”
Bytes Cafe, a new coffee shop and game room, is now open at 6565 Babcock Rd. #22. The concept is the brainchild of Mari Moya, who carved her own entrepreneurial path while battling a rare and painful neurological disease. The anime-themed shop serves espresso drinks and homemade desserts like its signature cheesecakes. Guests can borrow board games, sign up to use computer stations, or bring their own entertainment.
A new sweets shop at 5332 San Pedro Ave. aims to both cause and cure a sugar rush. Kandi Kovewill open on May 31, offering lollipops, gumballs, and other nostalgic treats. Once kids get hopped up, they can blow off steam in an indoor playroom featuring a jungle gym, bounce house, and more.
