SUDDEN SHUTTERS
San Antonio's Restaurant Claudine abruptly closes after 4 years

Restaurant Claudine is now closed.
After four years, Restaurant Claudine has abruptly closed. The French-Southern restaurant announced on Instagram that Monday, June 22, was the last day of business at 512 E. Grayson St.
“The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, and so are we,” wrote the restaurant. “While this chapter has come to a close, our passion for creating memorable dining experiences remains stronger than ever.”
Restaurant Claudine opened in October 2022, rehabbing a disused Victorian cottage into a destination restaurant. The interior was high Southern maximalist, filled with de Gournay-esque floral wallpaper, reclaimed chandeliers, and a plate rack with mismatched china.
The menu attempted the same balancing act, mixing a Cajun gumbo with Gascon duck confit. The concept was an echo of America’s upscale Southern moment, gaining local popularity but never achieving the national profile of Nashville’s Husk, Poole’s in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Austin’s Olamaie.
Restaurant Claudine’s closure follows a turbulent few years for owners Carpenter Carpenter Hospitality. The group first burst onto the scene in 2020 with Little Em’s Oyster Bar — a concept that still remains its flagship. But since then, several restaurants under the group’s umbrella have come and gone.
In 2024, the group shuttered the two-year-old Up Scale and later moved Little Em’s into the space. That same year, it reeled in Go Fish after reinventing the space as an oyster bar. In addition to the signature oyster bar, Carpenter Carpenter still operates pricey sushi spot Nineteen Hyaku and Beau’s Tiny Diner in the original Em’s space.
In the closing statement, Carpenter Carpenter said it was already moving on to its next concept — a refrain that has become common as the portfolio churned.
“[W]hile Restaurant Claudine’s story ends here, ours does not,” wrote a rep on social media. “We look forward to sharing what’s next in a new, yet familiar neighborhood.”
