SUDDEN SHUTTERS
San Antonio barbecue joint to close after 4 months on East Side

Potbelli BBQ will close in 30-90 days.
The fire will soon go out at Potbelli BBQ. After a brief four-month run, the East Side joint is ending its restaurant operations to focus on catering.
In a social media video, owner and pitmaster Terrence Russell said the plan is close in 30 or 90 days, operating in its usual hours in the meantime. After the restaurant shutters for good, Potbelli will continue to take catering orders for Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
"I am extremely grateful and happy to all the people who've supported us since we started this short journey,” Russell said in the video. “This was a decision that was made solely by me, and I spoke to my wife about it. We both agreed it’s time…we’re going to let it go.”
Potbelli opened its restaurant on July 26 at 3363 E Commerce St. #104. The eatery was known for its classic Central Texas barbecue, serving by-the-pound brisket, ribs, pulled pork with a variety of Southern sides such as potato salad and ranch beans.
The business held unconventional hours, but still drew strong initial buzz. Potbelli only had a tight lunch service on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from noon-2:30. Recently, it began opening on Saturdays from 3:30-6:30 pm.
Russell didn’t share what effect that limited window has on the business, but the location may have been a stronger factor. The building was in a mostly industrial area with little foot traffic. According to social posts, the pitmaster also kept a day job during the restaurant’s run.
The shutter comes as San Antonio restaurants continue to grapple with a rocky business climate. In October, the Texas Restaurant Association issued a warning call for the hospitality industry, asking owners to prepare for the holiday season as “rising food and labor costs continue to squeeze margins.”
