Fresh Tex-Mex restaurant revives historic San Antonio River Walk space

San Antonio's Tex-Mex scene is getting a fresh new addition. Luz Roja, opening March 10 at 419 N. St. Mary's St., will offer health-conscious takes on familiar favorites, featuring lean proteins and fresh herbs. The latest project from downtown developer Devin Elder revives the former Blanco Cafe space on the River Walk.

According to a release, Elder drafted restaurateur Dan Ward to bring his vision to life. A veteran of Alamo City's hospitality scene, Ward was the operating partner of the two local Piatti locations for 24 years and helped develop concepts like Camp Outpost.

The upcoming restaurant reimagines the former space of Blanco Cafe, which moved from its 45-year-old home to 201 W. Commerce St. in July 2024. The renovations include a full-service bar and private dining rooms. A back patio was added to take advantage of River Walk views.

The decor received a complete overhaul, too. The warm dining room is filled with contemporary Mexican design elements such as geometric tiles, serape-striped banquettes, and a ceiling mural inspired by Otomi embroidery. However, longtime locals will spot one preserved feature — the original pentagonal mosaic floors.

The menu follows suit with a fresher take on regional fare. Although the menu lists Tex-Mex classics like nachos smothered in melted Monterey Jack cheese, there is a lighter influence in dishes like a shrimp relleno stuffed with corn and veggie enchiladas with zucchini, mushrooms, and poblano peppers.

Luz Roja is the latest evolution of "Downtown West," the area surrounding Legacy Park. City planners and developers are working to shift the area away from its nine-to-five business roots into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood with nightlife, dining, and residential options.

"As a downtown developer, I am excited to bring new local concepts to downtown," Elder says in the release. "Luz Roja aims to support the revitalization of the North St. Mary's block, bringing new energy to San Antonio's Downtown West neighborhood."

The restaurant has yet to release details on opening hours and days.
