New Braunfels loses Fatburger and Round Table Pizza amid Texas retreat

Round Table Pizza and sibling restaurant Fatburger have exited New Braunfels.
Barely a week after closing one of San Antonio’s last Fatburgers, California restaurant group FAT Brands is scaling back in New Braunfels. The troubled company has closed both the Fatburger and Round Table Pizza in the Marketplace Shopping Center at 651 N Business IH 35.
In 2022, Fat Brands announced a rapid Texas expansion that would bring 80 locations of its flagship brands — Fatburger, Round Table Pizza, and Buffalo's Express — to the San Antonio area. Round Table Pizza made its New Braunfels debut in October 2024, followed closely by Fatburger in November 2024.
Since then, the group’s optimism seems to have soured. In late January, FAT Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections, closing 32 of its company-owned restaurants: Smokey Bones, Yalla Mediterranean, and Johnny Rockets. Although no San Antonio restaurants were included in that initial list, the chain has been quietly reducing its area footprint.
Fatburger is known for its no-frills signature burger piled with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and relish. Although the chain leans on nostalgia, it does follow culinary trends. Sandwich options now include gluten-free buns, vegan cheese, Impossible patties, and a low-carb Skinnyburger subbing in two meat patties for the sponge-dough bun.
Meanwhile, Round Table earned its epic reputation with its signature three-cheese blend, high-quality ingredients, and homemade dough. Its menu is similar to many of its competitors in the struggling pizza industry, serving pies, wings, and appetizers like garlic Parmesan twists.
Both brands are longtime favorites in their home state. Fatburger’s history dates back to 1947, while Round Table got its start in 1959.
It’s unclear why the company is pulling back on South Central Texas, but so far, it hasn’t made any official announcements, nor responded to requests for comment. In addition to closing a Fatburger location in March, it shuttered a Round Table Pizza outlet in February.
