Summer of sippin'
Escape the heat at these 6 San Antonio speakeasies
We don't need to tell you twice: It's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. And while there are plenty of local pools to dive into, San Antonio's bar scene offers another respite — no SPF required. Escape the heat and venture into some of the city's coolest speakeasies instead.
Amor Eterno
Hidden in plain sight in Southtown, Amor Eterno (the winner of CultureMap's Best Bar of the Year for 2023), exudes a cool vibe without even trying. Once you find your way inside, the bar bathes you in a soft purple glow, with a top-notch bartending team serving up drinks from Amor Eterno's signature menu. Currently, they've got several summer-themed house cocktails like the Southtown Sunrise with jalapeño-infused tequila, and the rum-based Toes in the Sand. The bar also dedicates itself to supporting other local businesses, frequently hosting pop-up events, live DJ sets and more.
The RD Speakeasy
In true speakeasy style, guests need to text the RD Speakeasy's phone number ahead of time to book a reservation, and secure an exclusive password for their night out. Located behind the Barn Door restaurant on North New Braunfels, RD is named for the two owners behind the concept, whose sole aim was to share their love of specialty cocktails and classic drinks with the city. Once you secure a spot inside, you'll find a dimly lit and cozy space — perfect for a date night. Also, check the bookcase if you need to use the restroom. Book a reservation by texting 210-605-2292 or click here.
The Bunker Mixology
Lines are already out the door for The Bunker Mixology, the city's newest speakeasy concept straight from the Gusto Group masterminds (the team behind popular restaurants/bar like Toro Kitchen and Bar, Cuishe Cocina Mexicana, and more). Located near the Majestic Theatre, the downstairs speakeasy effortlessly blends the old and the new with classic art pieces in one room and NFTS in the other. Behind the bar, dedicated mixologists truly craft each cocktail featured on the classic art-inspired menu, making ordering itself an artistic experience. When even the walk to the restroom presents as a fun photo opportunity, you know you're in for a fun night.
The Modernist
East Grayson street has a hidden gem in an unassuming house — if you blink, you'll miss The Modernist, but once you find it, be prepared to enjoy a specialty cocktail (or two) curated just for you by the skilled bartenders inside. Instead of a menu, bartenders at The Modernist will ask you for your preferred flavor profiles and spirit of choice, carefully concocting a drink that's tailor made to your desire. There's just one reason why so many locals love this hidden gem.
The Havana Bar
The Havana Bar is a stark contrast to its brightly lit, turquoise-tinged upstairs neighbor, Ocho, at the Hotel Havana. Privacy is the name of the game at this San Antonio speakeasy. The lights are constantly low and the cocktails are consistently flavorful. In the spirit of the hotel itself, the cocktails have a Cuban flair. Enjoy a date night with candlelight and cocktails at the Havana Bar, also a perfect spot if you're looking for a place to grab a drink after a show at the Tobin Center.
Cellar Mixology
Located in a secret entrance underneath the Toro Kitchen and Bar location in St. Paul's Square (hint — look for the rose), Cellar Mixology is another innovative speakeasy from the Gusto Group. What's interesting about the cocktail menu at Cellar is the history behind each drink — for example, the Under the Rose is an apt tribute to Cellar's entire concept — "Under the rose, anything goes."
