Fancy burger joint and speakeasy check in at historic New Braunfels inn
Tubing season may be entering its final days, but two new projects are giving San Antonians a reason to visit New Braunfels well into the fall. On September 27, entrepreneurs Terry and Celina Muckenfuss announced the opening of a new casual restaurant and stylish speakeasy on the original site of the historic Prince Solms Inn.
The first to arrive on October 19 is a basement bar attached to the hotel at 295 E. San Antonio St., according to a release. Although the Prince Solms dates back to 1898, Sidecar takes its inspiration from the roaring ’20s. Unlike the Prohibition era, this speakeasy will be easily accessible, so customers will not have to stumble to find a hidden door.
The drink program includes classic cocktails (we’re guessing a Sidecar will be on the menu), draft and bottled beer, and wine by the glass or bottle. Vino is also available on tap, but customers shouldn’t expect a Bota Box. Instead, the bartenders will be serving Napa Valley varietals to ensure quality.
That commitment also expends to the mixed drinks, which feature syrups made entirely in-house and sculpture-grade ice from a San Antonio supplier.
Having their own bar might come in handy as the busy restaurateurs prepare to open their second concept in as many weeks. On October 26, the pair will greet the first customers at Muck & Fuss (get it?), a casual eatery with refined comfort food.
The eatery is housed in a new construction built on the the former location of a feed store, originally part of the Prince Solms complex. Though modern in design, it references its 19th century neighbor with a pitched roof and two columns that mimic chimneys.
Chef Kris Fuller’s menu is equally contemporary with a focus on approachable foods like tacos, salads, and sandwiches. Burgers — available in varieties like the Cubano with pulled pork, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and a Dijon ailoi, and the Salty Goat with goat cheese, bacon, and spicy pepper jelly — are a particular point of pride with meat ground in-house daily.
Like Sidecar, Muck & Fuss is designed to serve as a watering hole. Here, beer will take center stage with 26 local and national craft brews on tap, many not available elsewhere in Comal County.
If San Antonians want to try out both concepts, they needn’t worry about the prohibitive cost of an Uber ride back home. The Muckenfusses also own the inn. We’re sure they’d be more than happy to book buzzed customers a room to sleep it off.
