It turns out that the Northwest Side isn't the only San Antonio neighborhood with roller coasters. Throughout the city, the ups and downs of the restaurant industry keep providing whiplash. As several eateries adapt to a slate of bad news, an adventurous burger joint, a Puerto Rican bodega, and a returning Chinese restaurant are on track for fall openings.

Openings and closings

Killer Burger is seeking much sunnier climes. The Portland, Oregon-based chain announced plans to open a new location at 12834 Potranco Rd., its first outpost outside the Pacific Northwest. The bacon-loving company's approach resembles Portland's most famous culinary export — Voodoo Donuts. Guests can expect unexpected pairings like bleu cheese fondue and grilled onions and peanut butter sauce and pickles.

Southtown eatery Luna Rosa welcomed a sibling to the family on September 24. Via Instagram, the Puerto Rican favorite announced the opening of the Bodega at Luna Rosa next door to the main restaurant. The cafe serves coffee drinks and pastries for now, but the post promised that sandwiches and salads would soon be on the way.

After weathering the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating blaze, Three Amigos Chinese Food is back on the scene. A banner announcing the rebirth was first spotted on social media and confirmed by CultureMap. The owners initially expected a quick rebound after an electrical issue sparked the fire, but it has been shuttered since June 2023.

Popular taco joint El Remedio has suspended its brick-and-mortar until further notice. In an October 2 Instagram video, owner Joshua Palacios said the team "woke up to some bad news" but did not elaborate. The closure is purportedly temporary, but the team is hardly out of the business. On October 1, it opened its new food truck, Ta'Con Madres, at 11375 Shaenfield Rd.

In late August, Lucy Cooper's Ice House co-owner Braunda Smithannounced she had sold two of the concept's locations to a Houston-based company. Now, more details have emerged. Both the 13838 Jones Maltsberger and New Braunfels stores will be transformed into Tommy John's Tailgate. Few details have emerged about the menu, but the locations will have a sportier atmosphere with pickleball and live events.

Other news and notes

Hash Vegan Eatery is taking a direct approach to ensure its solvency. In late September, the South Side business launched a GoFundMe to save the plant-based restaurant and sober bar, asking for $20,000. At press time, owners and brothers Michael and Rogelio Sanchez have surpassed the halfway milestone of their goal.

Though it has been open less than a year, some fizz has settled on Mimosa Gossip. The Stone Oak brunch spot recently took to social media to announce it was cutting back its hours due to "extremely slow" business. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the spot will shutter at 2 pm instead of 3 pm, issuing a last call at 1:30 pm.

In cheerier brunch news, Southtown bar Gimme Gimmelaunched an AM service on September 28. The brunch menu from chef Paul Petersen includes avocado toast, a bagel breakfast sandwich, venison chili, and a smash burger with bacon and a runny egg. In addition to serving the day-drinking trio of mimosas, micheladas, and bloody Marys, the bar encourages afternoon naps with a frozen chispa.
