Sensational San Antonio seafood restaurant cancels plans for Austin location
Looks like Austin will have to wait longer to get a taste of Pinch Boil House and Bia Bar. On July 12, the acclaimed San Antonio restaurant announced it is pulling out of the East Austin location originally planned to open in summer 2019.
Chefs Sean Wen and Andrew Ho opened Pinch Boil House in September 2017, after a series of successful pop-ups in San Antonio. The menu of Southeast Asian street food and Viet-Cajun seafood boils soon made it into a sensation the Alamo City.
Its popularity was matched with critical success. Among the many accolades, the restaurant was also a finalist for CultureMap San Antonio’s 2018 Tastemaker Award for Best New Restaurant.
The owners did not offer a detailed explanation for the change in plans. In a statement, they would only say that “unfortunately, some unexpected delays and changes occurred.”
It’s unclear how far Wen and Ho got into the Austin buildout. A November 2018 Instagram post teasing the concept showed the beginnings of construction, but since then the team has not posted any progress.
Pinch Boil House’s commitment to the Capital City, however, has not wavered. Although the owners will be focusing on growing their San Antonio shop in the near term, they have already begun scouting for a new Austin location. A rep tells CultureMap that they are eyeing a mid- to late-2020 opening date.
