fun around town
San Antonio lives it up as one of the top 25 most fun American cities
From visiting museums, to attending unique concerts, to finding a new favorite place to eat, there's plenty to do around San Antonio that makes it an entertaining place to live. But there's plenty more to do around the city that helped it earn its top 25 rank in WalletHub's new list of the "Most Fun Cities in America" in 2023.
The study compared 182 U.S. cities across 65 metrics to determine the level of "fun" for each city. The metrics were split among three main categories: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and cost. Each city was evaluated based on the number of attractions per capita, nightlife activities per capita, and the average prices for eating at a restaurant or buying a movie ticket, and much more.
San Antonio's fun-loving No. 25 rank in 2023 follows a separate WalletHub study that ranked Texas the No. 7 most fun U.S. state. San Antonio and Austin (No. 7) ranked among of several popular U.S. destinations, such as Las Vegas, Nevada (No. 1); New York, New York (No. 10); and Los Angeles, California (No. 20). Pittsburgh, Philadelphia (No. 24), just eked out a win over San Antonio.
San Antonio's overall nightlife and parties rank was No. 23; that included things like bars, dance clubs, music, and comedy. In the category for entertainment and recreation, San Antonio ranked No. 30, with the fifth most park playgrounds per capita. "Fun" is one way to put it, but with all that, things are looking pretty well-rounded in the Alamo City.
The category that it performed the worst in was costs, where the city ranked No. 68 out of the total 182 cities. This conflicts with another study in which San Antonio represented the second most affordable night out in the country — perhaps the drinks are cheap, but the other "fun" in the broader study is more highbrow.
Newcomers should definitely do their research before deciding to move to a city like San Antonio, rather than basing their decision on the few fun trips they've taken over the course of a few days. And as WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe explains, it's important to learn more about a city and how it matches someone's "unique brand of fun."
"All cities have a variety of activities, but some shine more than others when it comes to things like parks and beaches, live music and comedy, partying, sports culture or fine dining,” Happe says. "Picking a city to spend a weekend in is easy, but moving to a city where you’ll have fun on a regular basis requires more research."
Other fun-filled Texas cities that earned spots in the top 100 of WalletHub's list include Austin (No. 7), Houston (No. 19), Dallas (No. 31), Fort Worth (No. 43), El Paso (No. 59), Plano (No. 71), Arlington (No. 75), and Corpus Christi (No. 92).
