POSTAL PROBLEMS
San Antonio ranks among worst cities for mail carrier dog attacks

Dog attacks on mail carriers are a cliche for a reason
It may sound like a comic strip gag, but dog attacks on U.S. Postal Service workers remain a serious problem. According to USPS, San Antonio is one of the worst cities in the nation for violent dog incidents, ranking ninth among major metros.
"Every single day, our postal employees serve their communities across dynamic, fast-changing environments," said Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, in a release. "Preventing dog-related incidents requires constant, shared vigilance."
San Antonio's ranking isn't that surprising considering the city's exploding feral dog problem. A recent report from Animal Care Services shows that dangerous dog cases in San Antonio tripled over the last year. Numbers are based on calls to 311 and sworn affidavits of dangerous and aggressive dogs encountered.
According to the USPS, the risks go beyond just bites. Attacks can be life-threatening.
"I was walking my route when a dog jumped the fence and lunged at me," shared San Antonio Letter Carrier Fiona Hudson in the release. "I used my dog repellent and mailbag to defend myself, but it was too late. I was rushed to the hospital bleeding, with a broken bone, a severe arm sprain, and was barely able to move.”
San Antonio isn't the only Texas city with canine problems. Dallas ranked second with 50 attacks in 2025, while Houston ranked fourth with 44. However, these numbers are not adjusted for population. If the data is crunched per 100,000 residents, San Antonio’s 32 cases outpaces Houston with 2.13 versus 1.83, respectively (Dallas still leads with 3.5).
To combat the issue, USPS has announced a Dog Bite Awareness campaign for June. Some of the tips include signing up for Informed Delivery, securing dogs away from mailboxes or front doors, and never receiving mail directly from the carrier in the dog's presence, which pets could interpret as a threat to the owner.
USPS also reminds that failure to keep dogs from attacking a mail carrier can lead to suspension of mail service, fines, and legal attempts to recover money for medical bills.
