PLANTING ROOTS
Cherished San Antonio nursery closing to bloom into nature retreat

Shades of Green nursery will become a legacy garden in 2026.
After more than four decades of providing curb appeal to San Antonio homes, venerable nursery Shades of Green is closing at the end of 2025. Still, there's no need to weep in your azaleas. Owners Roberta Churchin and Bob Webster are transforming the business into a nature sanctuary so locals can enjoy the land for generations to come.
The Shades of Green Legacy Garden will ensure that North Side development won't intrude on the 334 Sunset Rd. tract. A towering canopy of cypress trees, planted 45 years ago, will provide a backdrop for meditation and learning away from the office buildings that have encroached on the once-quiet neighborhood.
"We've always loved that through the years people come to the nursery not only for plants but to enjoy the beauty and serenity it offers," says Churchin, via a release. "The Legacy Garden will be a peaceful place to gather, observe nature, and experience quiet surroundings."

The lush garden will be sown with native and adapted plants, including pollinator varieties to attract butterflies and bees. Accessible paths will lead guests through a labyrinth, reflexology walk, children's vegetable garden, and peaceful water features.
To make sure the garden is self-sustaining, Churchin and Webster have launched a nonprofit foundation, Shades of Green Legacy Foundation, to help guide the transformation and maintain the future grounds. A $10 million capital campaign is currently underway to build classroom and event structures and establish an endowment.
Locals have until December 31 to stock up on orchids and shade trees. In early 2026, construction will begin on the new garden spaces after the final design is approved.
"This is our thank-you to the community that has supported us for so many years," adds Bob Webster. "We wanted to protect the beautiful, towering cypress trees that we planted and create a quiet sanctuary that will serve as a space for learning, inspiration, and contemplation."
