NINE LIVES, NINE INNINGS
San Antonio Missions pounce on cat-friendly game and adoption event

San Antonio Missions will host its first Take Meowt to the Ballgame night on June 18.
It's not a belated April Fool's joke: The San Antonio Missions are inviting Alamo City baseball fans and their feline friends to Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium at 5757 U.S. 90 W for their first-ever "Take Meowt to the Ballgame" night on Wednesday, June 18. The promotional event lets baseball fans bring their cats to the game or adopt a new companion from San Antonio Pets Alive.
Although having kittens pounce around the stadium might seem like a recipe for cat-astrophe, Minor League Baseball (MiLB) teams have been vetting it since 2011. Inspired by popular dog-friendly "Bark in the Park" nights, the State College Spikes decided to try a tabby twist, hosting its first "Purr in the Park" game.
Other MiLB franchises took note. Now, similar theme nights are held across the nation. Whether cats actually like America's favorite pastime is up for debate, but they have plenty of experience running in circles.
The promotion does have some rules. While feline fans do not have to pay for admission, they must arrive at the stadium in a pet carrier or a leash. Pet owners no doubt have a feel whether their cat will greet hundreds of cheering fans with indifference or abject terror. It's probably okay to tell kittens, "There's no mewing in baseball."
After the final pitch, the Missions will invite its fuzzy guests onto the field to run the bases. Again, the sporty kittens will have to be cratered or leashed, but owners will surely get a few choice shots for their Instagram feeds. If only the Missions had a line of cat-friendly Flying Chanclas jerseys.
Amid the caterwauling, the Missions will take on the Frisco RoughRiders. Tickets are available online and start at $13.03 for berm seating. The two teams play ball at 7:05 pm.
