SeaWorld San Antonio suffers sudden loss of beloved 11-year-old orca

Kamea was the youngest member of SeaWorld's pod.
SeaWorld San Antonio is mourning the loss of Kamea, one of its most cherished orcas. The San Antonio marine park confirmed the whale's June 19 death via a social media statement.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved orca, Kamea," wrote a SeaWorld representative. "Despite the round-the-clock tireless efforts of our animal care and veterinary teams, she succumbed to an illness surrounded by those who loved and cared for her deeply."
Kamea was born at the park in December 2013 to mother Takara and father Kshamenk, giving her Icelandic-Argentinian heritage. At only 11 years old, she was the youngest orca in the Seaworld pod.
Her name translated to "precious one" in Hawaiian, an apt descriptor for an orca beloved by both visitors and staff. The SeaWorld post paid tribute to her "playful spirit and unique personality" that charmed thousands of guests each year.
"This is an incredibly difficult time for our SeaWorld family, especially those who worked closely with her," wrote the rep.
SeaWorld did not divulge the nature of Kamea's illness, but she was still relatively young. The average lifespan of a SeaWorld orca is just short of 47 years, according to a Journal of Mammalogy study.
Kamea's death comes at a rough time for San Antonio animal lovers. The beloved orca passed just one week after the San Antonio Zoo euthanized its 17-year-old male African lion, Tau, after two weeks of hospice care.
