TRAFFIC JAMS
San Antonio highway crashes onto list of riskiest roads in U.S.

Allstate says I-10 is one of the riskiest roads in the U.S.
Ahead of Halloween weekend, Allstate is issuing a warning to San Antonio drivers. The global insurance giant says Exit 578 to Pecan Valley Drive on I-10 is the 10th most risky road segment in the United States.
The data was culled from Allstate's safe driving program, Drivewise, which shows that aggressive driving behavior in major U.S. cities is especially common on the weekends, peaking between 11 am and 5 pm. According to the National Safety Council's most recent federal car crash statistics, fatal car crashes are more frequent on weekends, especially on Saturdays.
Alamo City is no different. Allstate's analysis says the I-10 stretch is most dangerous between 11 am-5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and the safest times are between 7-11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Surprisingly, rush hour times and post-last call drive times are both less hazardous than weekend afternoons. Perhaps it's a rush to wrap up errands?
Also a shocker: San Antonio was the only Texas city to make it to the list. This is despite Houston's I-45 expansion and Austin's infamous I-35 stretch being named "freeways without a future" by national nonprofit Congress for New Urbanism, reflecting highway infrastructure that is "nearing the end of its functional life."
Two San Antonio highways with deadly reputations were likewise left off the list. In June, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data indicated that I-410 and the San Antonio expanse of I-35 were two of the most lethal thoroughfares in Texas.
Allstate says driver caution is essential on holidays like Halloween, when revelry could make major roads even more hazardous.
"Halloween weekend brings out costumes, candy, and, unfortunately, some risky driving behavior," says Allstate safety expert Brian Tidwell, via a release. "With more people out later, Drivewise helps drivers stay alert and avoid patterns like speeding and sudden stops that can quickly turn a fun night into a dangerous one."
According to Allstate, the top 10 riskiest highway stretches in the nation include:
- No. 1: San Diego, California — Exit 7 to I-15N, I-8E
- No. 2: Atlanta, Georgia — Exit to Lakewood Avenue, SR-166E
- No. 3: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Exit to I-44E, SH-3S
- No. 4: Memphis, Tennessee — Exit 12A to Summer Avenue, I-240E
- No. 5: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Exit 74 to Beechwood Boulevard, I-376W
- No. 6: Phoenix, Arizona — Exit 223B to SR-74W, I-17N
- No. 7: Baltimore, Maryland — Exit 59 to MD-150, I-95N
- No. 8: Las Vegas, Nevada — Exit 82A to Lake Mead, I-11N/US-95N
