TIME crowns San Antonio's dazzling new landmark one of World's Greatest Places 2019
It hasn't even opened yet, but Ruby City is already one of the city's hottest attractions. On August 22, TIME released its annual World's Greatest Places 2019, a collection of 100 inspiring, surprising, or simply wonderful spots across the globe.
In order to determine the 100 World's Greatest Places, TIME says that while metrics certainly play a part, "also important is something that many travelers aspire to experience: the sense that one has stumbled upon the extraordinary."
When it opens on October 13, Ruby City will be no doubt be an extraordinary addition to San Antonio and South Texas. Located in Southtown, Ruby City is the culmination of Linda Pace's lifelong work as a collector and champion of the local art scene. Once open, the 14,472-square-foot contemporary art center will house part of Pace's collection and offer entry free of charge.
"Before she died in 2007, Linda Pace, heiress to a salsa fortune, encountered a red building in a dream," writes TIME's Wilder Davies. "She presented a sketch of the building to architect David Adjaye in hopes of creating a space that could showcase her art collection. Adjaye, now world renowned, has finally realized Pace’s dream."
Its opening show, "Waking Dream," was inspired by that same dream, something Pace recounts in her memoir, Dreaming Red: Creating Artpace. The show was curated by Kathryn Kanjo, director and CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, who called the project "a dream realized and a vision reflected."
TIME's other great places for 2019 include Fábrica de Arte Cubano in Havana, Hearst Castle in California, Quranic Park in Dubai, Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, and the Troy Museum in Turkey. Closer to home, Houston's Indigo restaurant and Oklahoma's The Gathering Place were also among the 100 World's Greatest Places.
