Acclaimed San Antonio Chicano artist unveils splashy new Pearl mural

Downtown’s art-filled Pearl district has unveiled another colorful addition: a five-panel mural titled “Agua y Comunidad” by acclaimed San Antonio Chicano artist and painter Joe Lopez. The large-scale artwork, now publicly viewable across from Ladino at 1100 Springs Plaza, contemplates water’s historic importance to the site.
Lopez weaves several aquatic elements into the lyrical piece, including hot springs and Pearl’s popular splash pad. The panels also depict several familiar Pearl sights like Hotel Emma and Stable Hall — and a flutter of monarch butterflies.
San Antonio native Lopez is a key figure in the Chicano Art Movement, known for weaving personal narratives with history. His body of work often draws from his Mexican-American heritage, honoring the everyday lives of his neighbors.

Lopez employed a painstaking process to bring his vision to life. First, he painted the original designs in oil on canvas before transferring the images to tile. The original canvasses are also on view to contextualize the artistic process.
“This mural is a tribute to the vital role water has played in shaping not only Pearl but also our city’s history,” said Pearl CEO Mesha Millsap via a news release. “Joe Lopez’s artistry brings this story to life with authenticity and beauty.”
Lopez, who grew up in San Antonio’s once-thriving Barrio Escondido, is well known to local art fans with work featured at Mission Road and the San Pedro Creek Culture Park. His signature motif is a rooster, symbolizing strength, beauty, and courage.
“Never in my life did I imagine that my art would be displayed at this scale,” said Lopez in a statement. “I am deeply thankful to my community and to everyone who has encouraged and supported my work over the years.”
