Over the Garden Walls
San Antonio Botanical Garden plants 12 murals for 45th anniversary

For the San Antonio Botanical Garden's 45th anniversary, it's unveiling a dozen new murals. The exhibition, called Reflections of Nature, will run from March 8 through October 27, 2025.
The murals will depict "themes of nature, plants, animals, and the diverse people of South Texas," according to a press release. They'll be placed around the garden's 38 acres.
Although diversity is a priority for the pieces, the collection as a whole is specifically inspired by Mexican muralists; the release mentions Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. They will vary by cultural and personal narratives infused by the 12 artists who made them, and they'll all "integrate" with certain plant collections.
Regional muralists include:
- Kat Cadena
- Christin Apodaca
- Tabria Williford
- Mitsumasa Overstreet
- Lucas Aoki
- Jennifer Khoshbin
- Holly Veselka
- Chris Sauter
- Rudy Herrara
- Kathy Sosa
- Rhys Munro
- Steve Parker
"Mural" is a bit of a loose term, since these installations will also include a "listening sculpture" made by Austin artist Steve Parker using salvaged instruments; some colored glass panes by San Antonio artist Rhys Munro; and what appears to be a ring of uniquely shaped benches by San Antonio artist Jennifer Khoshbin.
Local art firm Bridge Projects organized these efforts. San Antonians will likely recognize other public works by the group in Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair Park and Confluence Park.
As visitors experience the murals, they're encouraged to reflect on "art and nature in a harmonious environment" as well as people in nature. Those who would like to celebrate the exhibit's opening can stop by March 8 from 9 am to 1 pm for live performances, educational activities and concessions.
The murals can be viewed for free with garden admission ($18 before discounts) and membership. The San Antonio Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston Pl.
