Knocking it into the park
Popular San Antonio food truck unboxes long-awaited restaurant at Hemisfair
One of San Antonio’s most popular food trucks and caterers is thinking, well, inside the box with its latest endeavor.
The Box Street Social has grown from its food truck roots into its very first brick-and-mortar location, Box Street All Day, located downtown within Hemisfair.
It’s a move a long time in the making, as co-owner Daniel Treviño told CultureMap in 2019 that the plan was to open the restaurant in April 2020. Despite a pandemic pushback of more than a year, Box Street All Day is now officially open and welcoming diners to its new spot at The ’68, the mixed-use development at Hemisfair, complete with stunning views of the Tower of the Americas and Yanaguana Park.
“We are excited to create a space that we look for when we travel to other cities, and we are looking to give that back to the community,” Treviño says. “We plan to be a welcoming destination for locals and people visiting our beautiful downtown.”
The Box Street team brought on interior designer Caroline Garcia-Bowman, owner of The Faithful Maker, to create a refreshing and vibrant restaurant space that was influenced by the simplicity of Nordic design, the natural textures of the Australian coast, and the vibrancy of the boho eclectic style.
As such, the 3,600-square-foot interior of Box Street All Day features rattan furniture, lush plants, pops of pink, and even Instagram-worthy murals painted by local artist Cassidy Fritts. It all leads to the 5,000-square-foot dog-friendly patio that itself feels an extension of the restaurant’s park surroundings.
While the space may be alluring on its own, it’s chef Edward Garcia III’s tempting fare that will really draw San Antonians to the new restaurant. Indeed, in the past several years, the chef has gained a loyal foodie following, driven somewhat by his popular appearance on the Cooking Channel’s Man Fire Food, as well as his skill at creating memorable cuisine.
“It might be cheesy, but we cook what we like to eat: simple, tasteful food with a beautiful vibe,” Garcia says. “We’ll open with signature brunch items like milk bread French toast, morning buns, plus food truck favorites like our classic burger, spicy crab-stuffed avocado, and soon get our guests excited for dinner favorites like lamb shank curry, and steak and frites. We are ready to feed San Antonio!”
In addition to its tempting menu, the charming new restaurant will also feature a full bar and cocktail program, a coffee and espresso bar directed by San Antonio-based Pulp Coffee Roasters, and a wine shop curated by local vino consultant Gustavo Garcia that will offer grab-and-go wine, bites, and merch.
Further tapping the local community, Box Street All Day will also feature draft beers from new Hemisfair neighbor Künstler Brewing, which will open its second brewpub in Yanaguana Garden in the summer of 2022.
The hours of operation for Box Street All Day will be limited initially, with the restaurant open Thursday through Monday from 9 am-2:30 pm, though evening holiday parties and private events are available for booking now. Reservations can be made by calling 210-920-1602 or via OpenTable here.
