THE FUTURE IS NOW
Self-driving car service Waymo launches rides to San Antonio airport
Waymo now offers rides to and from San Antonio International Airport.
Self-driving car company Waymo is encroaching on one of the most lucrative gigs for ride-hail drivers. The Alphabet-owned service has expanded its local service area to include the San Antonio International Airport, making it the first autonomous cab company to offer airport transportation in Texas.
Waymo operates its ride-hailing service through its own app in most of the U.S. cities it services, including San Antonio. According to the company, Waymo passengers will be dropped off at the terminal curbs. Pickups are available in the same rideshare zone as Uber and Lyft.
"Providing a safe and reliable ride to and from the airport is one of the most requested uses for Waymo riders," explains Arica Gately, Waymo’s head of airport partnerships and business development, in a statement. "Expanding access to San Antonio International Airport will serve as a key connection to the region's transportation network."
Waymo soft launched service in San Antonio in November 2025, initially only offering the rides to employees. The company first began testing Alamo City’s roads the previous May as part of a multi-city “road trip” meant to map out roadways and help alleviate local concern over safety and other issues.
The company extended the rides to the general public in February, opening up rides in a 60-mile area that included popular destinations like downtown, North Star Mall, and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo fairgrounds.
Since then, the cars have had a few hiccups. In March, a man behind the driver’s seat of an autonomous Waymo car was ticketed after ignoring barricades and driving onto the scene of a house fire.
Still, the company maintains that its technology, Waymo Driver, is made safer by removing human errors like distraction and impairment. It says data from 170 million self-driving rides shows far fewer accidents than human-driven rides.
