new year, new records
San Antonio International Airport broke all-time passenger record in 2023
It's official: 2023 was the busiest year ever recorded at the San Antonio International Airport (SAT).
10,676,570 passengers flew through SAT in 2023, which is 313,530 more passengers (about three percent more) than the previous record set in 2019. Nearly 13 percent more passengers flew through SAT in 2023 than in 2022, a press release said.
2023 was truly a big year for SAT. Traveler records were broken every month from May to December, and passenger numbers reached more than 900,000 in December for the first time ever. July was the first month in which SAT flew more than a million passengers, and broke another record for the busiest day ever recorded with over 41,000 passengers flying through the airport on July 31.
SAT's tremendous growth has allowed for the addition of several new flight options in 2024, including nonstop international flights to Mexico, and its first nonstop flight to Europe. Even with the increase in traffic, SAT is still maintaining its status as one of the least stressful airports in the U.S.
San Antonio Airport System (SAAS) Director of Airports Jesus Saenz called the 2023 passenger record a "historical milestone" for the airport.
"We know how much hard work went into it all – with new routes announced domestically and internationally," Saenz said in a release. "2023 is now the year to beat. We’re getting ready for our first-ever nonstop flights to Europe starting in May on Condor Airlines – and we’re planning so much more in 2024."
New nonstop flights to Frankfurt, Germany, will begin May 17, and nonstop flights to Torreón, Mexico, will begin June 1.
Stateside, SAT will also begin daily nonstop flight services to Newark, New Jersey on April 5 via Spirit Airlines, and American Airlines will offer daily nonstop flights to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, starting June 5. Southwest Airlines will provide nonstop flights to Burbank, California, beginning June 4.
