San Antonio's Mokara Hotel saddles up for a luxurious room refresh
San Antonio’s Mokara Hotel & Spa is booking its accommodations for a new set of treatments. The boutique Omni property on the River Walk is refreshing all of its guest rooms and suites, combining contemporary design with a renewed focus on wellness.
The renovations, set to be completed in October, draw inspiration from the building’s former use as a saddle factory. Each room will feature hand-stitched leather decor and furniture, warm woods, and a stately neutral color palette. Alabaster and herringbone details give the spaces some textural interest, while horsehair-inspired wallpaper brings the subtle equestrian theme into the halls. Impressionist Western works by Dallas-based artist Lindsey Meyer will add unexpected pops of color and pattern.
The bathrooms, clad in an understated tessellated wallpaper that mimics tile, are designed for quiet rejuvenation. The rooms will also include new free-standing bathtubs for long soaks, which can be augmented by additional services. The hotel’s Bathtub Butler program turns the washrooms into a spa with extras like therapeutic bath crystals

The renovations are the next chapter for the building, which was built in the 19th century to house the L. Frank Saddlery Company. Texas entrepreneur Patrick J. Kennedy converted it into the Watermark Hotel & Spa in 2003, before Omni Hotels & Resorts acquired the property in 2006, later rebranding the hotel to Mokara in 2010.
Since the acquisition, Omni has slowly brought the hotel’s tack room roots back to the forefront. In 2018, Mokara revamped its lobby and meeting spaces, adding leather sofas, cowhide pillows, and a metal saddle sculpture in homage to the building’s heritage.
“As we approached this renovation, it was important to the Omni family and our team here at Mokara Hotel & Spa that we showcase the rich history of the original building, while elevating the luxurious experience we offer to our guests,” said Mokara Hotel & Spa General Manager Rusty Wallace, in a release. “This fall, we look forward to welcoming new and returning guests as we unveil the next chapter at Mokara and the revitalizing escape that awaits here in San Antonio.”
Mokara Hotel & Spa is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio at 212 W Crockett St. Reservations can be made online.
