Favorite Austin ice cream shop to make San Antonio debut
Zeds specializes in New Zealand-style soft serve.
Days after Capital City bakery Swedish Hill revealed plans to open a San Antonio café, the Alamo Heights area has landed another Austin scoop. Zeds Real Fruit Ice Cream, known for its New Zealand-style soft serve, is opening its first local shop in The Collection shopping center at 7959 Broadway.
The mini chain first started as a Portland, Oregon food truck. After a 2015 trip to New Zealand, friends Caleb Schmidt and Matt Porter got hooked on the country’s signature treat: vanilla ice cream blended with frozen fruit. The duo brought the idea home, parking a van outside the Oregon Zoo.
Both Schmidt and Porter had Texas roots, so they booked it to Austin in 2021, opening Zeds’ first brick-and-mortar in a former barbecue joint. Entrepreneurs Mack Brown (no, not this one) and TJ Brogran took over ownership in 2022, shifting operations from Oregon to Texas. Since then, the concept has expanded to three locations.
Zeds’ ice cream relies on a specialized Little Jem machine, where the base and mix-ins are loaded into a cone, blended with a drill-like attachment, and meticulously swirled into a clean peak. Although the process requires a steady hand, each order is blended in under a minute.
Once in the cup or cone, the fruity treat can be drizzled with sauces like honey, coconut cream, and peanut butter, then sprinkled with toppings such as streusel, buñuelo crumbs, or gummy bears. At the original Austin outpost, guests can pair it with beer, wine, and coffee, although it's not yet clear whether San Antonio will follow suit.
Zeds’ expansion comes as the Alamo Heights area is attracting a wave of attention from both inside and outside the state. Besides Swedish Hill, upcoming additions include Jack & Harry’s and Hudson House from Dallas-based Vandelay Hospitality Group, Los Tios from Houston’s Adair Concepts, and Connecticut chain PopUp Bagels.
According to a city filing, Zeds plans to start work on its San Antonio space in December. So far, the chain has not made any public announcement about the opening and did not immediately return a request for more information.
