FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT
Fiery hot chicken chain makes San Antonio debut in Stone Oak

Urban Bird has finally opened its first San Antonio restaurant.
A brand-new fast-casual player is keeping the Nashville-style hot chicken trend blazing in San Antonio. After a year of anticipation, Houston-based chain Urban Bird has debuted its first restaurant at 22106 U.S. 281 N #102, bringing fiery tenders and loaded fries to Stone Oak.
The upstart Texas chain, first launched in Katy in 2020, first announced Stone Oak and Far West Side outposts in July 2024, promising mid-2025 openings. Since then, the company has been a little behind schedule, but that didn’t stop it from surging ahead with a third planned storefront at 17603 La Cantera Pkwy. #119.
Like other hot chicken spots, Urban Bird offers various levels of spiciness, scaled from the tame “country” to the blistering “fire in the hole.” It takes pride in the quality of its birds, using Halal butchered meats that are raised without hormones or antibiotics.
The breaded tenders are remixed into most of their dishes — wedged between a toasted bun in a sando dressed with kale slaw, served with sweet cream waffles, and chopped up on loaded fries. The latter puts a Texas spin on the messy side with additions like street corn, barbecue chicken, and buttermilk ranch.
Former Houston Wingstop franchisees Chantel and Brandon Gawthrop founded the brand in 2020, along with a ghost kitchen, Chronic Fries. Since then, the chain has grown to 14 Texas locations with more on the way. Previously, the closest to Alamo City was in San Marcos.
“Urban Bird Hot Chicken is more than a restaurant – it’s a brand built for long-term success,” said Brandon Gawthorp via a release. “Our franchisees benefit from a proven concept, growing consumer demand, and the ability to join a brand that’s just getting started.”
The two other San Antonio locations are in the middle of construction. Urban Bird has yet to release the opening dates.
