COMING ATTRACTIONS
Huge Canadian chain Tim Hortons to open first San Antonio coffee shop

Will San Antonians be all aboot the Canadian newcomer?
First, Heated Rivalry, then a Team U.S.A. win, now more hockey buzz is entering the San Antonio chat. Tim Hortons — the massive Canadian doughnut and coffee chain named for an NHL legend — is opening its first San Antonio restaurant in Redland Plaza at 2919 N. Loop 1604 E.
While more common than Starbucks in its home country, “Timmy’s” is a relative newcomer in the U.S. It has more than 600 units outside the Canadian border, mostly focused on Northern states like Michigan, Ohio, and New York. But in late 2025, Katerina Glyptis, the chain’s U.S. President, told restaurant industry news site QSR Magazine that it was actively signing franchise deals throughout America, including five in Texas.
The chain was founded in 1964 by entrepreneur Jim Charad and the late Canadian ice hockey legend Tim Horton. Since then, it has grown to be Canada’s largest quick-service restaurant chain and a Canadian cultural fixture. Stan Mikita’s Donuts, Wayne and Garth’s hangout in Wayne’s World, was a direct homage.
“Tim’s is very much meant to be there for everyone,” Glyptis told QSR. “Our founder made us a place where anybody could go to feel at home. We try to live up to that by really providing people with whatever the offering is that they want.”
Although the chain made its name on doughnuts, it has adapted to contemporary tastes. In addition to the morning treat, Tim Hortons now serves Timbits (doughnut holes), breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and a variety of sweet and savory baked goods. The drink selection now covers espresso drinks, protein lattes, matcha, and fruity refreshers.
Tim Hortons has not officially announced a date for its San Antonio debut, but newly filed project details at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation estimate a quick buildout that ends in late June. A request for a more exact timeline was not immediately returned.
