Racy rendezvous spot and 3 other bars sidle up to San Antonio dining news
With climate change, a contentious election season, and Bennifer’s marital strife, we could all use a drink this summer. In this week’s food news, four new bars are vying to wet San Antonio’s whistle.
Openings
Hospitality juggernaut The Gusto Group — the company behind Toro Kitchen + Bar and Cuishe Cocina Mexicana — rolled out its latest two watering holes on June 15. With mirrored decor evoking Studio 54 by way of Andy Warhol’s Factory, Stylus Mixology offers nostalgic (if not decade-specific) cocktails like Funkytown and Ice Ice Baby. Boombox Pizza Bar keeps the retro vibes going with splatters of Trapper Keeper paint. With the sibling bars’ debut, Gusto now has five concepts in St. Paul’s Square.
Another hospitality project is giving it a go at 1915 Broadway #111. The address has suffered frequent turnover over the past few years with Señor Fish and Ay Caramba Taco Cantina never finding footing. Now, according to Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission records, a new concept called Tryst is hoping to make the troubled space work. No social media accounts or websites were readily findable at press time, but odds are it will have a ladies' night.
The owners of two popular Deol Bars are enrolling in college. According to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records are working on a third drinkery at 15622 Chase Hill Blvd #101 near University of Texas San Antonio’s main concept. No other details are available at press time.
Other news and notes
Mixtli and Emmer & Rye are doing their best to heal the deep San Antonio-Austin divisions. James Beard nominee Diego Galicia is traveling to Capitol City to take part in the acclaimed Austin restaurants’ Breaking Bread dinner series on August 8, a monthly meeting of culinary minds.
Postino is kicking off its annual Battle of the Bruschetta on July 1. The competition pits the chain’s chefs against each other in a bracket-style competition to figure out the best thing on sliced bread. Each matchup will only be available for a limited time as guests vote for their favorite. Last year’s winner was a Mexican street corn bite created in Katy.
