Mysterious new concept replaces beloved San Antonio pizza café

SoHill Cafe will soon be replaced by a new concept from the owners of Beacon Hill Market & Deli.
The 1700 block of San Antonio’s Blanco Road is undergoing a major dining shakeup. Chef Jean-Francois Poujol’s popular pizza restaurant, SoHill Café, has quietly shuttered, and a new concept from the owners of Beacon Hill Market & Deli will soon move in.
Beacon Hill Market teased the news via a May 4 Instagram post, accompanied by a photo of the space. For now, the owners are keeping mum about the concept, only hinting with the hashtag #LilTavernAtBeaconHill.
“Thank you SoHill Café,” read the post. “You were an inspiration. We’re excited and honored to give this historic space some love and dedication. We’ll keep you updated on our progress! Stay tuned….”
Poujol launched SoHill Café in the former home of Casbeers Café and Cantina in November 2018. Well-known for his French cuisine at Julia’s Bistro, the chef envisioned SoHill as a nod to his early career work under Ed LaDou, one of the forefathers of California-style pizza.
Bexar Tonics owners Matt McLaughlin and Maray McChesney opened Beacon Hill Market & Deli in February 2023 with a menu of East Coast-style sandwich classics like hoagies and Philly cheesesteaks. The restaurant has since racked up several accolades, including a CultureMap Tastemaker Award nomination for Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year.
SoHill has not issued an official statement about the closure, which appears to be fairly recent. The most recent Yelp review was posted on March 15. Poujol posted a statement the restaurant is “temporarily closed,” although the platform does not list a date. McLaughlin and McChesney have not revealed a timeline for its replacement.
