Party with a purpose at these 6 San Antonio spots celebrating Pride
From the Bud Light brouhaha to Target’s LGBT retreat, it’s been a rocky year for rainbow capitalism. Now more than ever, it’s important for businesses to put their money where their mouth is. In a year of sharpened rhetoric, these welcoming San Antonio spots are not only celebrating the joy of Pride Month but offering their direct support.
Black Laboratory Brewing
Throw some glitter on your laptop by purchasing a holographic sticker from this East Side treasure. The microbrewery is pledging to donate $1 for every sticker sold to the Thrive Youth Center. The local organization provides a supportive and empowering environment for LGBTQIA-plus youth experiencing homelessness.
Box St. All Day
It’s already the de rigueur brunch spot for San Antonio Insta-gays; now it’s their official outfitter. This June, the Hemisfair hot spot is selling colorful “Brunch is For Lovers” t-shirts to show their support for a safe and accepting city. Profits will be donated to a local LGBTQIA-plus nonprofit of the staff’s choosing.
Jaime’s Place
This West Side beer hall’s third Thursday El Mercadito event happens every month, but the June 15 edition will offer something special. While browsing through vendors and enjoying sets by Felipe Jr. and Joaquin Muerte, guests can also get community care from vital LGBTQIA-plus resources.
Little Death
Pregame before the parade at this St. Mary’s Strip hangout to help raise funds for Thrive Youth Center. The fun includes tunes by DJ Lil Latin Pup, live screen-printing from Crooked Arm Printing, and corndogs, natch.
The Tobin Center
Orange you glad it’s Pride? The famously be-Cheetoed Ru Paul’s Drag Race legend Coco Montrese will headline the OUT at the Tobin Pride Brunch on June 18. The event will also include bites from chef Armando Lopez and performances by local drag artists Kristi Waters, Violet S’Arbleu, and The Queen Fantasia Wood! Proceeds benefit Thrive.
Tony’s Siesta
This downtown cantina is making a splash with its Primo Pride Party on June 17 — the start of its Saturplay series of summer events. From 3-9 pm, revelers can cool off on an inflatable waterslide while enjoying tunes by resident deejays Trey Garcia, DJ Chacho, and DK Neko. Better yet, a dollar from every Bottoms Up cocktail sold will be donated to Pride Center (see below).
Bonus: Tony’s isn’t the only bar mixing it up for the Pride Center. A host of other local lounges are getting into the act thanks to a Tito’s Handmade Vodka campaign. Featured cocktails at Blush, Pink Shark, Bruno’s Dive Bar, Rosario’s, La Roca, Bonham Exchange, Rebelle, and more will benefit the Center’s work in identifying healthcare disparities in LGBTQIA-plus adult’s and elder’s access to healthcare.
