Buzzy sushi burrito restaurant rolls into San Antonio’s Far West Side

Makkirito will sell both vegetarian and meaty sushi burritos.
The owner of San Antonio’s popular Hugo’s Sushi and Asian Cuisine is hoping to make another big splash on the Far West Side. Hugo Gonzalez is opening Makirrito, a new restaurant devoted to trendy sushi burritos, at the upcoming Portico at Shaenfield Ranch development at 7807 W Loop 1604 N.
Texas developer Dominion Advisory Group previously teased the restaurant in May while announcing new tenants, but now Gonzalez is sharing more details. As the name implies, Makirrito focuses on burrito-sized maki (sushi rolls) wrapped in seaweed or a tortilla. The handhelds can be customized with fresh fish, shrimp tempura, grilled chicken, and veggies.
The spot will also serve a variety of poke bowls served on sushi rice or mixed greens. Traditional Japanese sides like edamame, seaweed salad, and cucumber salad will complete the meals.
Makirrito will set itself apart from other restaurants serving the fusion dish by incorporating Mexican flavors. In addition to the expected jalapeños and avocados, Gonzalez says the new concept will make various salsas and condiments, such as chiles toreados, to add zip.
“Makirrito was created to be fresh, quick, and crave-worthy — ideal for lunch, dinner, or on-the-go,” says Gonzalez via email. “Beyond food, we’re aiming to create a fun, modern space where the community can experience something new and different while still feeling approachable and family-friendly.”
Makirrito is one of six new restaurants coming to the multimillion-dollar Far West Side development. The eatery will join local favorites Box St. All Day and Crepeccino and San Antonio newcomers Bitelo Brazilian Steakhouse, D’Fish House, and El Mercado. Gonzalez says he hopes to he’ll be rolling sushirritos by December or early 2026.
